Service 5 Signs Your Old Heating & Air System Needs Replacement

November 10, 2022

Like all mechanical things, heating and air systems have an expected lifespan. The time comes when the system is simply not doing the job, it’s wasting energy, or repairs become too frequent and/or expensive. Then you’ll be money ahead to upgrade to a new system.

How long a system lasts depends on use, how well it’s manufactured, and how well the system is maintained. The average lifespan of individual components of an HVAC system looks like this:

  • Furnaces: 15 to 20 years
  • Heat Pumps: 15 years
  • Air Conditioning Units: 15 to 20 years
  • Tankless Water Heaters: 12 to 15 years
  • Electric or Gas Water Heaters: 10 years
  • Thermostats: 15 years

Maintain Your System for longer life

Proper and regular service, repairs and maintenance are key to longevity. To get the most out of your heating and air system, be sure to:

  • Remove debris from the outside unit.
  • Change your air filter every three months – once a month if you have pets or allergies.
  • Have repairs done as soon as you notice a problem.
  • Schedule regular maintenance with a McElroy’s technician at least twice a year – once each summer and once each winter.

5 signs to Replace Your HVAC System

Proper maintenance will help your heating and air system last longer, but eventually it will need replacement. These signs help you to be confident that it’s time to consider investing in a new system:

  • High Energy Bills

Kansas weather may be unpredictable, but on average, your monthly energy bill should be similar to the same month in previous years. If you notice more energy usage, it may be a sign your system is operating with less efficiency.

  • Inconsistent Indoor Temperature

An aging system can struggle to keep the temperature in your home consistent. You may also notice an increase in the amount of time it spends running.

  • Unusual Sounds from the system

As the system ages, it may make odd noises, such as grinding and squealing. If this happens, have the system inspected as soon as possible. McElroy’s offers 24-hour emergency service by calling 1(877)-McElroy.

  • Increased Dust

This could be a sign that your air conditioning system is losing efficiency and not able to remove the dust.

  • Pricey Repairs Needed

If your system is more than 10 years old and in need of a repair that would cost more than half the price of a new AC, it may be a wiser investment to upgrade to a new system.
